The Australian: Sri Lankan army shells hit aid workers

WARRING forces in Sri Lanka have defied international laws, shelling a hospital believed to be sheltering more than 500 civilians and aid workers, as up to 250,000 people remained trapped in the battle zone.

The UN told The Australian yesterday that heavy shelling of the hospital at Puttukkudiyiruppu (known as PTK), which lies behind the front lines of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the Mullaitivu district, had resulted in many more casualties.
