The National Flag of Tamil Eelam

Tamileelam National Flag

A few of our readers have asked us about the Tamil Eelam flag. Here is what we believe is an accepted explanation.

The national flag is the symbol of the independent state of Tamil  Eelam in the making, rooted in the martial traditions (veera marapuhal) of the Tamils.

Four aspects of ideals and mission of Tamil Eelam are represented by the four colours of the flag:

Yellow signifies that Tamils’ aspiration to freely govern themselves in their own homeland is a fundamental political and human right. The colour expresses the righteousness of Tamil struggle and reinforces the Tamil Nation’s will to uphold moral highground during its path towards freedom.

Red represents the realisation that freedom is not complete by establishment of a separate state of Tamil Eelam. We should abolish distinctions of caste and class. Egalitarianism should become our  spiritual principle. Gender equality should permeate Tamil society. The revolutionary changes necessary to spread social justice represented by these principles are reflected by this colour.

Black reminds that the march towards freedom is wrought with dangers, death and destruction. That it’s filled with pain and misery. It signifies determination and resoluteness vital to withstand the adversities and build the new nation of Tamil Eelam; to provide security and to defend the borders.

White demands purity, honesty and selflessness from the leaders and citizens of Tamil Eelam.

Over all Tamil national flag is a messenger, which demands freedom, justice and illustrates Tamils’ courageous freedom struggle.  The flag is also the symbol of the country of independent Tamil Eelam.

Not only does the significance of the Tamil national flag represent the high-minded ideals of the struggle for Tamil Eelam and the LTTE under the head of the peerless military genius Prabhakaran, it also stands as an inspiration to people the world over who value egalitarian principles, freedom and independence. Triumph for the establishment of Tamil Eelam!

In this time of mourning, we have an opportunity today to wipe the slate clean and start afresh with new vigour, and free of all the old constaints that have divided, alienated, and oppressed the people in the past. We have so much work to do at this time of need when so many lives of our brethren is still under the threat of the rascist forces in our motherland. We have an obligation to take care of the down trodden and dis-enfranchised victims of the war. So we should use this opportunity very wisely because this may be our last opportunity. Let us not waste it. Let us choose our symbols, slogans, salutes, and strategies carefully as this will determine the support we get from the general public which in turn will influence the actions taken by Governments.
