The fighting in northern Sri Lanka has been described as ‘nothing short of catastrophic’ by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The ICRC is extremely worried about some 50,000 civilians isolated in a narrow coastal strip which has been declared a ‘no-fire zone’ by the government. These civilians are in effect trapped in the middle of a war zone, as Sri Lankan troops launch what is believed to be their final offensive against ailing Tamil Tiger rebels.
