Greens renew call for immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka

Brown writes to High Commissioner

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown today wrote to the Sri Lankan High
Commissioner, Sanaka Walgampaya, P.C, urging the government to implement
an immediate ceasefire to allow trapped civilians to escape the
conflict.

“The humanitarian crisis and escalating conflict between the Sri Lankan
military and the Tamil Tigers is putting thousands of civilians’ lives
at risk,” Senator Brown said.

“Today I wrote a letter to the Sri Lankan High Commissioner urging his
government to implement an immediate ceasefire so that the civilians
trapped in the war zone can escape. This would be a reasonable and
humanitarian path to take.

Senator Brown also wrote to Foreign Minister Stephen Smith asking for
the Rudd government to urgently increase its efforts to persuade the Sri
Lankan government to declare an immediate ceasefire.
