Channel 4 – Correspondent expelled from Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government has ordered Channel 4 News’s Asia Correspondent Nick Paton Walsh to leave the country, after taking exception to a report broadcast on Channel 4 News on 5th May

Nick Paton Walsh was part of a three-person team that has been reporting from the country for Channel 4 News since April 19th. All three were told they were being deported by the country’s Defence Minister earlier today.

CNN – British journalists held in Sri Lanka after news report

Sri Lankan authorities on Saturday detained a British news team that produced a report about allegations of abuse and ill-treatment of Tamil refugees.

Three journalists from Channel 4 were seized and handed over to Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department for interrogation, police spokesman Ranjih Gunasekera told reporters.

AFP – ITN news team told to leave Sri Lanka

A British television news team was told to leave Sri Lanka after it broadcast a report carrying allegations of poor treatment of minority Tamils held in camps on the island nation, it said Saturday.

Correspondent Nick Paton-Walsh, producer Bessie Du and cameraman Matt Jasper were arrested and told to leave Sri Lanka, said ITN, which produces Channel 4’s news bulletins.

A British Channel 4 News team has been arrested in Sri Lanka after reporting allegations of abuse in camps for displaced Tamils, the broadcaster said.

The Sri Lankan Defence Minister ordered Asia correspondent Nick Paton-Walsh, cameraman Matt Jasper and producer Bessie Du to leave the country.

Three journalists for Channel 4 news were arrested in the eastern Sri Lankan city of Trincomalee yesterday on charges of tarnishing the image of the security forces, Sri Lankan police said. Nick Paton Walsh, the channel’s Asia correspondent, Bessie Du, a producer, and Matt Jasper, a cameraman, were taken for questioning to the capital Colombo in connection with a report they made on alleged sexual abuse in camps for war refugees.
