May 25, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE on 24 May 2009 11:00 AM –

Memorial Service for Tamil victims of Sri Lankan State Genocide

Thousands are expected to attend the Memorial Service today at 4PM at Martin Place, Sydney to mourn the deaths of Tamil civilians killed in Sri Lanka’s 32 year civil war and pray for freedom for the Tamil nation.

The Tamil community has lost an estimated 130,000 civilians over the past 32 years, killed by the Sri Lankan military in its war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The Sri Lankan State’s latest military campaign saw the death of up to 50,000 Tamil civilians in a matter of months.

Yesterday, up to 3000 Australians from various communities marched down George Street, demanding international facilitation for a political solution that addressed the grievances of the Tamil population in the island of Sri Lanka, who have been discriminated and persecuted at the hands of successive Sinhalese Buddhist dominated governments.
