Dear Fellow Letter Writers,

I am deeply distressed to learn, today, of the heavy sentence imposed on Jayaprakash Sittampalam (J. S.) Tissainayagam under anti-terror legislation for his critical writings and publishing activities. The writer, also known as Tissa, has been ill-treated in prison in Sri Lanka and there are serious concerns for his health.

Please see my attached letter to our High Commissioner, Kathy Klugman, in Colombo. I’ll be posting a hard copy to Canberra as well as faxing direct to the High Commission in Colombo itself on +94 11 2686 453. I encourage you to do one or both of these things yourself. Also attached is additional information from International PEN.

As always it would be helpful to us to know if you have been able to write a letter on Tissa’s behalf.

Best wishes,

Gaby Naher
