The Catholic Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Pat Power, says federal parliamentarians are losing compassion for asylum-seekers amid claims people in Indonesian immigration detention centres are being abused.
Bishop Power yesterday likened the Rudd Government’s deal with Indonesia to hold asylum-seekers to the Howard government’s ”Pacific solution”, saying it was a case of ”out of sight, out of mind”.
He was disappointed with the attitude of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Parliament, suggesting there seemed to be a blind spot when it came to Tamil asylum-seekers.
”The talk of border protection … to my mind that’s taking the focus off the people that are most needing help,” Bishop Power said. More
